We humans have forged strong and lasting bonds with the pets we love. We feed them, and shelter them. We laugh with them at their antics, exercise with them, give them love and affection. In return we receive affection, fun, exercise, and unconditional love and trust.
Beyond the benefits that we receive from our day to day interactions with our pets, animals have proven to have a positive effect on our physical and emotional well being. This is evidenced by the thousands of dogs, cats, horses and other animals that are used at rehabilitation centers and care facilities around the world. It is also evidenced by many scientific studies that prove the health benefits such as lowering our blood pressure and creating overall feelings of well being. One of these studies is the 1999 American Heart Association on blood pressure conducted with the State University of New York.
We worry about our pets when they appear sad and when they are sick. We grieve deeply for them when they pass.
Over the years we humans have realized that memorials and tributes that help us with the passing of our human loved ones can also help us with the passing of our animal loved ones.
